US insurers add new requirements for button battery instructions

In order to reduce the accidents caused by young children's swallowing of button batteries, Underwriters Laboratories recently completed the latest revision of the UL 60065 standard for home, commercial and professional audio and video products. The revised content was officially announced in the form of standard Annex I.

UL 60065 New Annex I provides detailed requirements for products such as audio and video containing button batteries and related labeling on the operating instructions, including: the product must be reminded by the specified graphic logo to check the instructions for use; It must include information on the chemical burns that may be caused by swallowing the button battery; the button battery must be clearly indicated in the product; the consumer is reminded to prevent the child from being exposed to the battery and the recommendations for how to seek treatment after the battery has been swallowed. The standard will conduct abusive testing of certified products to ensure the safe use of consumption by children. The new standard will come into effect on January 2, 2014, as the new standard requires re-testing of previously certified products and the objective need for redesign and replacement of machinery.

Compared with the American toy safety standard ASTM F963, F963 mainly provides precautions and requirements for button batteries in toys, while the new UL 60065 standard targets mostly non-toy consumer products such as hearing aids, clocks, remote controls, digital products, Flashlights and e-cards, while the former emphasizes the elimination of potential risks by adding a battery lock function, while the latter focuses on risk prevention by strengthening warnings and providing preventive information.

The inspection and quarantine department reminds relevant enterprises: on the one hand, it should pay attention to the relevant development of foreign safety standards in a timely manner, attach great importance to the revision of the standard, update the production and processing technology as soon as possible, and increase the corresponding requirements in the product and the instruction manual in strict accordance with the standard requirements. Warning content. On the other hand, we should effectively raise the awareness of risk. The safety of button batteries has become the focus of attention in developed countries and regions in Europe and the United States. Enterprises with button batteries in export products should take precautions and take precautionary measures in advance to avoid complaints about consumers being hurt. Encountered losses such as notification recalls.
